2008 Christmas e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

"Hope never fails us..." Romans 5:5

The times we live in are uncertain but so were the days when Jesus was born. Bethlehem was a place subdued by Greeks, Romans and Muslims at different points in its history and was at that time under the rule of Herod, a man known for his brutality.

Generally, people led very simple lives and lived under the shadow of their rulers. They were hoping for a saviour who would release them from poverty and oppression.

Who would have known that the saviour they were looking for would come in the form of a helpless baby and that the gift he brought was not only for them but for all generations to come?

Today, as we rise to the challenges of a world in crisis, let us remember the eternal hope that is ever before us, and how it comes to us in ways the world does not recognize. It often comes as a still, small voice reassuring us that we have a God who holds all things in His hands. Let us hope and rejoice that our Saviour lives not just in the past, but is with us as we face today and tomorrow!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.~Romans 15:13

Papemelroti Craft: Paper Dove-making
See our woven paper doves hanging in our branches? Here's a video that will show you how to make it for your own decorative purposes!

This is a paper craft handed down from generation to generation in some Philippine families. It's usually made out of banana leaves. Oftentimes the weaving method featured is used for boiling rice, natively called "puso". Click here to view

12 Ways to Have a Merry Christmas
Once the "ber" months roll in, we sometimes feel a rising panic at the thought of all the preparations, shopping, parties, traffic and crowds that come with the season. It would be helpful to plan to have the most memorable Christmas ever without spending or stressing much!

1. This time is for family! Get out your calendar and block out the days you want to spend with your family. Stick to it strictly even if you get invited to last minute parties or get tempted to work overtime just to impress the boss.

2. When spending quality time with your loved ones, don't just spend time watching a telenovela or movie but as much as possible, have an interactive activity such as playing cards or board games or better yet telling stories of the blessings of the past year!

3. Have a time for peace and quiet. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, recharge by going by yourself to some place conducive to pleasant thoughts. Thank God for another year of life and meditate on how He wants you to approach the new year. Read Jeremiah 29:11 and pray for all your plans to be led by God's Spirit!

4. Serve the most impoverished in your neighborhood. Jesus, whose birth we celebrate said "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40). How delighted He would be as we give this gift! Aspire to give hope to those who have lost theirs by acts of selfless deeds of kindness.

5. Dress the house up in lights! This year, instead of the old Christmas decor, make your own! Cut out easy to do snowflakes (see this video) or make paper doves (below) and put Christmas lights on them to add sparkle to your home!

6. Celebrate the Advent Season with special traditions! Make an advent wreathe (click here to know how) or make a Countdown Calendar! The calendar can be filled with daily activities you can offer to God as your gifts for His coming! Example of things you may offer to Him is to serve your parents one day and say an encouraging word to someone sad on another day.

7. Try a new recipe and cook it together with family and friends! This is quality time you will remember for years to come and the best reward is the afterward tasting session!

8. Gather friends and family for a memorable video! Write down interview questions for your oldest relatives to preserve these precious stories for generations to come. Gather the children for their own presentation. On Christmas eve, watching this video can be your reunion activity.

9. Sing Christmas carols around a bonfire until you run out of songs to sing!

10. Read the Christmas story to your children and if you would like their imagination and creativity to flourish, act it out in a play and let them participate.

11. Here's an easy way to make a Christmas like no other. Instead of putting the gifts under the tree, why not hide them and make a map for the recipients to find it.

12. Bless your whole family with a retreat. Join church-based events or make your own. You can also integrate a time to be spiritually recharged during your family reunion by having the family, including little children, write down blessings they've received and collecting this in a yearly scrapbook for all to cherish!

2008 Teacher's Day e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Each one of us, in one way or another, is a teacher.

If we are
parents, we teach our values to our kids. If we have younger siblings, we teach them how to behave by the way we act towards them. At school, we are teachers and students not only in academics but also about relationships, responsibilities, excellence and many more things.

The question is not if we are teachers or not but if we are good teachers. We know a g
ood teacher when we see one. He is the one who is patient with us when we find it most difficult to learn. Let's pay tribute to the good teachers in all of us!

Happy
Teacher's Day on October 5, 2008!

One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child. ~Author Unknown

Motivational Teacher Quotes

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that they are as few as there are any other great artists.
Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit. - John SteinbeckWe must view young people not as empty bottles to be filled, but as candles to be lit. - Robert H. Shaffer

M

Thank
You from the Tutors!

We want to thank those of you who have responded to our call for children's storybooks and workbooks!

The kids we are tutoring are so blessed! A small group of tutors goes to Brgy. Bungad every other saturday to tutor around 10 or so gradeschool scholars of He Cares Foundation. Many thanks as well to Bgy. Captain Ricky Corpuz wh
o allows us to use the barangay premises for our tutorials.

He is also fixing up a room for us to set up a barang
ay library where the kids can stay and practice their reading (which they really need to do!).

This is a very simple yet meaningful activity for any small group of people and
we hope it will make a difference in the lives of these very bright children! They just need a helping hand and more than any academic superiority, we are giving them the encouragement to keep on keeping on!If you want to donate more books, just address them to Christina and drop them off at any Papemelroti branch. It will be part of our new library! If you want to be one of our tutors, simply reply to this e-mail with the word "TUTOR" in the subject line and we will include you in our tutors listing.

2008 Grandparent's e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Remember the times when you were little and most of your carefree days would be spent on a playground?

Childhood is such a precious time and the memories of it will forever be a part of us.

Much of the joys we've experienced were made possible through the people who've raised us up, cared for us and whether gently or sternly, taught us life's lessons - our grandparents.

They have influenced our future more than we realize. Let's make sure that the good they've shown us lives on in our lives and is passed on to others!

Happy Grandparents' Day on September 7, 2008!

Worthwhile things to do and go to...

Tutoring Streetkids

Ever wonder what to do when a street kid asks you for money? We asked Kuya Joe Dean Sola of He Cares Foundation. Their mission is to get the kids out of the streets and into good homes and schools. We hope with them that one day, there will be no more Filipino children begging in the streets.

Kuya Joe Dean says you can give them something to eat but don't give them money. Instead, befriend them, be kind to them and show them they don't belong in the streets.

If you want to join others who share this vision, volunteer for He Cares foundation and other charitable organizations working to get the kids off the streets. He Cares now supports 200 scholars but it's a gruelling task to change lives. They need people to help them understand their lessons, teach them good manners and right conduct and most of all, they need people to encourage them that they have a bright future!

If you're part of a school club, organization or group of friends, you can adopt one of the He Cares areas and put up a tutoring pool of volunteers. This way, the kids will have ates and kuyas to help them along the way!

Together, we can make a difference! Visit the He Cares website for more information www.hecaresfoundation.com

2008 Rainy Day e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

As we walk along life's pathways, we will inevitably encounter dark skies and rainclouds blocking out the sunshine and dampening our days.

It would do well for us to remember that with rains come rainbows. It nourishes all living things. It clears out the smog in the skies. There is a time for rain in the season of our soul and rather than let it wash away our hope, let it bring about a new beginning.

Sunshine and rain make a rainbow. God's power and prayer make a miracle. ~Author Unknown

Ways to Enjoy Rainy Days
Most people associate wet weather to traffic jams and soggy clothing but there is a way to take delight in this time of the year!
  • The rains bring life! Our mindset has a lot to do with how we view the rainy season. If we remember how all living things need sustenance through life's natural showers, it will help us appreciate the rain! When tragic storms cause damage to lives and property, let's bring hope to those affected by generously showering them with our care, comfort and support. To help typhoon "Frank" victims click here
  • Bring family history alive! When the downpour forces you to stay indoors, make it a memorable family event! Take a video of your grandparents and the most senior members in the family. Let them relate their earliest memories and most cherished stories. You can bring this out on other rainy days or even during special family reunions!
  • Try out a new recipe! Explore the delicious flavors you've never tasted before! Warm food on cold days are a specially soothing treat! Get the family together for a cozy party indoors!
  • Play boardgames! You can have fun "Creating Your Very Own Story" game. Have at least 3 players sit in a circle. Reseller's Corner
When Papemelroti started, it was only one little shop on Tomas Morato, Quezon City. Mrs. Alejandro would display items with care and one by one they would get sold. She developed a knack in choosing which items looked well together. Lo and behold, not one or two items, but the whole display would get sold!

It's quite a challenge to fix up a store specially when you have limited space but it will be a simpler task if you think of it as your home. It should be a place to relax all who visit. Everyone should feel at home and not be "stressed" within its confines. In short, it must be a refuge.

Experimentation is also a good way to develop the art of excellent interiors. Move furniture and items around frequently to see which works and looks better. Ask your friends and family their opinion on which layout is the more aesthetically pleasing and practical as well (space-saving for instance).

Lastly, enjoy! In whatever work we do, the care and enthusiasm in which we perform each task shows through to our customers so let's give it our all!

2008 Father's Day e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Being a father is much like flying a kite. You have to develop the right hold at all times. If your aim is to make the kite soar as high as it possibly can, you need to master the art of holding firm as well as the art of letting go.

Holding too tightly oftentimes limits flight power and will eventually lead to the kite succumbing to a fall specially when it's subjected to sudden gusts of wind.

Holding too lose will let the kite accelerate too fast and lead to a premature dive.

A practiced kite flyer knows his kite and it's capabilities. Is it strong enough to stand the weather's condition? Is it capable of flying higher? His hand instinctively knows when to hold firm and is sensitive to where the kite wants to go. He loosens his grip when the kite is stable enough.

We each want to see kids become the best people they can be. We want them to grow strong and be able to weather any challenge they come across, virtually being above the clouds that life may bring!

Let's love our friends and family too like a master kite flyer in how we deal with them. As their spirits fly higher and higher, we will find our hearts soar high with them!

Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever. ~Author Unknown

Fun Things to Do with Dad

Father's day is just around the corner and what better way to honor your father then to plan out a day in his honor!!! Here are some ways to give him a day to remember!
  1. Before Dad wakes up, set the breakfast table with greeting cards, gifts, balloons and decor for a big surprise!
  2. Let him have his favorite breakfast while his favorite music is playing in the background.
  3. Go play his favorite sport with him. Does he love fishing? kayaking? basketball? golf? If it's not your forte, have him teach you!
  4. Let him have a rest from household chores like cleaning the car and taking out the trash. Offer to do all these on Father's day!
  5. Try out a new restaurant which served Dad's favorite food!
  6. Give a personalized gift like his framed picture on the cover of his favorite magazine! Make your own art with this website! Click over to http://www.magmypic.com/ and print out the image of your own making into the size of a blank frame (8.5" x 11") and buy one of our ready blank frames in Papemelroti shops.

Recycled Crafts for Dad
There are countless ways to make useful items from old throwaways. Here are ways to show your father how much you love him, while saving the earth from trash while you're at it! Try them out and think up your own crafts!!!

1. Use an old tie for dad's sunglass holder. Make sure your dad won't use that tie anymore or you'll get into trouble! Click to Family Fun.com for this novel idea!

2. Cut up an old sweatshirt's sleeves for a No-Sew Winter Hat for Dad. Cut the elastic off the cuff. At the wrist end, cut slits up the sleeve about 6". Randomly tie slits together in double knots. Not all the slits need to be tied, some can just hang down. Roll the other end up twice to make a brim. It's really that easy! Click to Making Friends site for more ideas

3. Spark your creativity! Find more fun ideas on this site!

Earth Day

Dear Friend,

Why is Earth Day so important?

Maybe because we're all in this earth together. Each person needs to be aware of the impact of his littlest action.

According to the Rainforest website, "experts estimate that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases."

The future may seem bleak for now but it's heartening to know that it still lies in our hands (together). Did you know that:

- If we all recycled our Sunday paper, we would save over 5,000 trees every week.

- If every family planted just one tree, over a billion pounds of "greenhouse gases" would be removed from the atmosphere every year.

- If we didn't use that styrofoam cup to drink coffee for 5 mins, it won't pollute the environment 500 years from now.

Environment facts and figures show us the impact of our lifestyle on the world at large so let's take the time to care and care enough to act!

A people without children would face a hopeless future; a country without trees is almost helpless. - Theodore Roosevelt

2008 Graduation e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Just recently, an early photograph of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan was discovered reminding us of a remarkable alliance.

Being deaf, dumb and quite spoilt, no one thought anything would come of Helen but Anne persevered and strived to step into Helen's world. Finally, through the feel of water through her palm, Helen's curiosity got the better of her and she wanted to learn of all the world around her. In short , her whole world opened up from that moment on.

The teacher, Anne, did not let her being visually impaired get in the way of showing the world to Helen. Helen graduated Magna Cum Laude in Radcliffe and went on to be a world famous speaker, author and humanitarian, traveling over 39 countries.

"The Miracle Worker*" is in all of us. Anne probably did not, in her wildest dreams, think that her ward would be able to accomplish so much by her tutelage but she persevered and most likely, loved Helen much. So much so that all the world was blessed by this wondrous work!

"No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit."
- Helen Keller

Honor a Teacher Today
Do you have a favorite teacher? There are so many things a good teacher inspires in us. They teach us not only academic matters but they motivate us to reach for our dreams no matter how far they seem.

Let's express our gratitude to our teachers! Take the time to thank them for choosing a praiseworthy vocation that touches so many lives!

“Filipino teachers are some of the most dedicated educators in the world. We’ve heard heroic stories about our teachers and we have every reason to be proud of them,” said Michelle Casio, Academic Programs Manager, Microsoft Philippines.
Some ideas for honoring your teacher:

  1. Be a good student, excel in class, participate and show you're paying attention. This is the best gift you can give a teacher since their work will bear fruit in you.
  2. Give a greeting. Let everyone sign and say thank you. Be sincere (it's not about grades!).
  3. Make a poster with your teacher's photo and artfully decorate with his (or her) positive personality traits for a souvenir to cherish through the years!
  4. Give your teacher something he can use in her work. You may know of something he needs. Your class can all pitch in and get that item for him.
  5. Tell them about great websites for teachers such as: Partners in Learning Phils Pinoy Teachers Network and Teachers Network (USA)
  6. Donate to the school in his behalf. Maybe you have school supplies, books for the library or even computers lying around. It will make your teacher proud!

Volunteer Opportunities

ATD Festival of Learning - Join All Together in Dignity (ATD) Fourth World Philippines, an NGO, as it conducts it's annual summer Festival of Learning in different poor communities in Manila. They teach children arts and crafts and other workshops like writing, dancing, and music appreciation as well field trips.

Volunteers cannot describe the happiness of the children when they visit them! For this year, ATD is reaching out to 400 children. In order for children to participate, ATD needs additional funds. Aside from funds, they are looking for sponsors who can bring children to interesting and educational sites like concerts, plays, art galleries, museums, zoos and children recreational centers for free or discounted entrance fees. ATD needs volunteers to act as facilitators or share their talents in any skills to teach the children.

If you cannot volunteer, your donation of P200 / $5.50 will provide 1 child's art materials, transport, museum fees and excursion trips. If you can help in any way, please do so! Contact 563.9312 or atdmnl@skyinet.net. Please forward this to your family, friends and networks.

Med Mission of Lingkod - Inviting doctors, dentists, nurses, physical therapists! San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan, which is also an outreach community of the Society of Jesus (or Jesuits), with whom we are serving together with in this mission.

For many years now, Lingkod ng Panginoon Greenhills has held this medical mission to help our less fortunate brothers & sisters, and each year we have been blessed to have the opportunity to serve so many in one day. The mission on April 6 seeks to do the same - planning to serve 500 patients, and more if possible. To donate medicine or volunteer, contact tina@papemelroti.com today!

Turn Lights out - On March 29, 8 PM, See your world in a whole new light. "Turn the lights out" for Earth Hour - an event that will fuel awareness on climate change and prove that when the people of the world work together, they can make a difference in the fight against global warming. It will take place throughout the country from 8 to 9.

WWF invites you to participate by shutting off lights for 60 minutes, and do tell your friends about it too! Launched in Australia last year on March 31, Earth Hour moved 2.2 million people and 2100 businesses in Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour. This massive collective effort reduced the city's energy consumption by 10.2%!

With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. YOUR participation will go a long way in spreading the message that we, as individual droplets working collectively – can create an impetus far more powerful than the mightiest of rivers. For more information, log on to the WWF Earth Hour page at: www.earthhour.org.

Dear Friend,

These times call for positive hearts filled with faith and hope for
the future. What a blessing then that we can always count on love as
a timeless virtue we can find in the family and friends we hold dear.
It's just as well that this is the season of Lent, when we remember
the One who loved us first. He showed, not just in word but in deed,
that "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for
one's friends."(John 15:13).

May we know how truly loved we are! We wish you a wonderful season
filled with love within and all around you!

How to Love More
When all is said and done, the greatest acheivement in life is to have loved. When you feel that your love power has decreased through the years, here are some thoughts to make you a more loving person.

  1. Since we know that God is love, it makes sense to go to the Source. Pray for a more loving heart. "it is the Lord that makes love increase" - 1 Thes 3:12
  2. Expressing love increases love. Give your loved one a gift. Think of how to surprise him/her. Take extra effort to serve them. Deliberately love! Don't delay! Express your love in a unique way that will truly delight the beloved!
  3. Relationships are very much like plants. One has to nurture these daily or they will wither and die! Be consistent in taking care of your relationships and you will harvest a lifetime of loving!
  4. Wear the other person's shoes! By imagining yourself in another's situation, you grow in empathy, compassion and understanding. This will awaken in you more ways to love, and love more effectively.
  5. Listen more. Talk less. Practice the ministry of presence. You don't have to do much to make another person feel appreciated. Just be there.
  6. Remember the good stuff. The person you love has so many good traits that oftentimes is forgotten through life's humdrums. Appreciate and give thanks for this person that God has brought into your life. Know you are blessed with the gift of that person.

Qualities of a Great Partner
by Dr. Kay Kuzma, "When You Are Serious About Love" (Excerpt)

1. A HAPPY DISPOSITION- look for a happy, optimistic person. Find someone who has a sense of humor and can laugh at himself/herself... True happiness springs from a content heart. Beware of the person who is only happy when you are around. You're going to get tired of being responsible for another person's happiness. You could end up feeling guilty when the person slips into bouts of depression... True happiness is... a part of a person's character, regardless of the circumstances.

2. THOUGHTFULNESS -... How does your date treat his parents and yours? Chances are you'll get treated very much the same way. Does he see things that need to be done and offer to help? Or does he put his own needs first? Does he open the car door and wait to seat you at the table? Manners are important- and they seldom get better after marriage.

3. NOT EASILY ANGERED- ... Temper outbursts... can be the symptom of internal hostility. This hostility is often repressed during courtship as a person is trying hard to be on his best behavior... Take seriously any outburst you observe, and check with others who have known this person in different situations to see if they have noticed this trait... The way a woman treats her younger brother may be an indication of how she will treat her husband... Be leery of the person who has not learned to express his anger in words and instead merely harbors angry feelings in his heart. Going silent and withdrawing from a loved one because of anger is unhealthy and damaging to a relationship... Be sure you date a person long enough to observe how easily he or she becomes angry and how these feelings are expressed. Ask yourself, "Is this what I want to live with for
a lifetime?"

4. WILLING TO SOLVE PROBLEMS - It's almost impossible to solve relationship problems by yourself. Marry someone who will be honest enough to admit being wrong, who doesn't have a habit of blaming others...

5. PURITY - Purity is not just an old-fashioned virtue... it's just safer to date someone who hasn't played around... At the same time you should not hold it against a person for past involvements. Mind purity is very important. Is your date pure in his thoughts and speech, as well as behavior? What jokes does he tell? What music does she listen to? What movies does he watch? What books or magazines does she read? Are they pure or suggestive? Mind pollution can lead to disrespect of the opposite gender.

6. TRUTHFUL - Too often couples play games when they are becoming acquainted... playing games in a relationship is a form of dishonesty... Marriage isn't a game. It's a serious lifetime commitment. Search your own feelings and share honestly during your courtship. Be You.

7. GOOD HEALTH HABITS - No one wants to marry a slob - and few do...Bad health habits are difficult to break. That is why it's best to look for a person who has already established positive health practices.

8. ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY - Here are some questions that might detect irresponsibility: ... Does she see things that need to be done and do them? Does he volunteer to help? Does she get to places on time? Does he make lame excuses to get out of responsibilities? Does she take her talents seriously and work to improve her skills? Does he take care of his car and other personal possessions?... Think about it. Just how responsible is the person you are dating?

9. GOOD SENSE OF SELF-WORTH - Often in a dating relationship, individuals with a poor self-esteem glean a sense of value from the person they're with. They become dependent on their to make them feel good... If you don't want to live a lifetime having to tiptoe around a person's fragile ego or having to hold yourself back for fear of how your spouse will react, then be careful not to get emotionally involved with someone who has a low sense of self-worth.

10. LIKES CHILDREN - Before marriage you may discuss children, but unless you're around a lot of children and can observe your date interacting with them in a wide variety of situations, you really don't have any idea about how he or she may discipline your children in the future. Seldom do both parents totally agree on how a child should be raised. Finding someone who at least likes children is an advantage.

11. A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD - It's very important for a marriage partner to have a personal relationship with God. Look for someone who is spiritually sensitive and willing to follow God's law. A Spirit-filled life is one filled with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Galatians 5:22,23). A person who exhibits these traits is certainly easier to live with than someone who doesn't... What about your date? If you're interested in a real Christian, make sure his faith is part of his life twenty-four hours a day.

12. ACCEPTS YOU JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - True love is unconditional love... The important question to ask is, "Do I love her faults?" Only when you can truly love the total person, including all the points and bad habits, can you accept your mate for who he is and not secretly wish you could change him.

13. WILLING TO GROW - Good marriage partners grow together. They encourage each other to maximize their knowledge, skills and potential... Make sure the person you date seriously is the kind
of person who is open to learning and will make changes when changes need to be made.

14. AFFECTIONATE - The ability to express love through words and actions is vital for an intimate love relationship... look for tender words, acts and touches that are given naturally and "appropriately" throughout the day, and not just in private.
