Vintage Bottles

Once upon a time, there was a woman who scrounged around her home, finding some french bottles tucked away in the darkness. They were wrapped in cloth roses, ribbons and lace. Strung up with wire swirls that seemed so magical.

The woman wondered where these bottles came from and why they had a french label on them. Lo and behold she found a worn yellowed note inside. She unrolled it carefully and read it whisperingly ...

It was a Love Poem from Longfellow. It brought an indescribably warmth to her heart.

Where did these bottles hail from and why were they hidden for so long? This mystery held no answer for her. They were only a few and no more. We don't know if they will come again. She treasures these now and put them in an honored place on her mantle. To behold and delight in for ages to come.

Note: This is a semi-fictional story about our new Vintage Bottles for sale. It is true though that we probably cannot make these again but it's not for certain *like many things in this life.

Papemelroti is proud to join the One World One Heart 2011 (fondly called as OWOH) Event! The fifth of it's kind, its also on its last run so we wish you a most enjoyable tour around the world of blogs who are joining this event. This very successful event was started by Lisa Swifka to provide a venue for bloggers to form friendships and discover so many wonderful arts and crafts enthusiasts online.

If this is your first time to visit our blog, you might be curious as to what our name means. Papemelroti stands for the first two syllables of the artistic siblings who started this chain of Philippine shops back in 1967. Today there are 15 stores around the metro and 2 in Pampanga area. This year, we are offering this Garden Pendant. The artwork was done by calej one of Papemelroti's artists. Being a naturalist and birdwatcher, she made a drawing of a native Pitta bird perched on a lively branch. She used colored pencils for the colors. You may view her own work and OWOH giveaway here.

The whole piece was assembled by artist Meldy who is usually a sculptor but is most recently into jewelry design. She used a variety of materials for the piece like cloth, metal, beads and the oval pendant with the bird design. Her creative blog is here.

This necklace is very easy to wear for both casual and fancy days. Pretty things always inspire so do join in for a chance to win this. It's quite easy!

Christmas is a wonderful season to express and share your creativity. It is such a festive season and the best activities you can do at this time is to be with the family (specially the children).

Nothing inspires creativity more than actually getting down to it and doing it!

We've developed a very simple kit for all of you who want to make this Christmas a hands-on one for the home. It's simple, it's fun to do and best of all, it's so affordable.

Christmas is a time to recall the wonderful and magical story of a child who is to be King! It evokes in children the early beginning of faith and inspiration. It is a season to introduce them to Jesus, the King of Kings!

The children will marvelously and quite easily imagine the babe in the stable, as they assemble the parts. One can even do a little reenactment of the scenes using the figures. The baby Jesus can come only on Christmas day as we are all still "waiting" during this time of Advent. It is a simple visual reminder of the Nativity. Ideal for children to easily make at home.

This kit will surely bring the spirit of fun and creativity into many homes.    It is also made of eco-friendly materials that were re-purposed for this project. All you need to begin is some scrap cloth, glue and scissors.

A Time to Give

Here's an opportunity to be blessed!

For 7 years, Ronald (not his real name) has been incarcerated at the Quezon City jail because he happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. During a party he attended, a fight ensued and someone was killed. Ronald got jailed because he was there.

With full trust in God, Ronald awaits freedom from behind overcrowded walls of the prison. He does not have a room or even a bed to call his own. With no locker or shelf for their things, each inmate places whatever belongings he has in a covered bucket or old paint pail.

The Papemelroti management in coordination with members from Ang Ligaya ng Panginoon Community want to help Ronald and his fellow inmates.

On December 17, at a sponsored mass, they plan to give out 250 gifts and merienda for the prisoners. They will give out pails so that they have a place to put their things. These big paint pails are the inmate's "lockers" because there are no cabinets for a majority of the inmates.

Here's where we need your help! We want to put soap, shampoo, toothpaste, face towel, canned goods, shirt, towels, etc. inside. Your donation, no matter how small is appreciated! Pls bring to any papemelroti branch (no money pls) and label for prison ministry.

For cash donations we can send you a G-cash or BPI account or even try to pick it up.

Let us outdo each other in doing good ...so that the least may be blessed ..and God glorified in our works!

"He who is generous will be blessed" (Prov 22:9). With the recent typhoon devastation, many have been finding truly heart-filled ways to spend their Christmas season. Instead of giving expensive gifts to their loved ones, they've opted to give simple tokens. They will then give what they will save to help the recent flood victims.
This is the time to remember those whose families are far away and feel a bit lonely. The lady whose husband is an OFW? The parish priest or your church's pastor? A friend in need? Make this Christmas special in this way.
Want to give a truly meaningful gift this Christmas? Give a gift you made yourself! Here are some ideas:

a. Memorabilia Box: To make this you can buy a cardboard box or recycle an old gift box and wrap with cloth and paper. Paste old family photos (with the backgrounds cut out) on the cover to personalize! Inside the box, put a heartwarming letters or notes of thanks from family and friends!

b. Homemade Scents: All you need is some small empty bottles, vodka and essential oils (click here to purchase at Papemelroti). You can choose from a variety of essential oils (only a few drops needed). Pour the vodka into a small empty bottle. Add 1-2 drops of essential oil. Shake well. Let sit for 1 week and your perfume is done! Add a nice label!

c. Safety Bracelet! Tiny beads and safety pins are all you need for this project. String the beads onto the safety pins and when all done, connect together to make fancy bracelet designs! You can use different beads and colors for this project! You can also try this as a necklace! Mix with other materials for a unique look!

Smiling and saying thanks does a lot more than you think.

Makes you look a lot better. Erase those frown lines and replace them with laugh lines. It will give your face a more relaxed and pleasant look. This will draw people to spend time with you.
Scientifically proven! Dr. Robert Emmons, a Professor of Psychology at the University of California at Davis, conducted a study on being grateful. Respondents who were tasked to be more grateful during a period of 3 weeks reported better sleep and exercise patterns. They were more optimistic about the coming week and fewer reported physical symptoms, such as pain. Moreover, his team observed an increase in reported connectedness to other people and in the likelihood of helping another person deal with a personal problem.
Stress relief. The dog ate your homework? Instead of taking it out on the dog, think of 4 or 5 things you are thankful for. You'll notice an instant change of perspective and feel emotionally better.
Helps other become better people too! Gratitude when expressed unleashes a cycle of kindness and caring in others too. People just have to reciprocate when you are kind to them! So go ahead say "thank you"!
If you're still not convinced, think of this. Holding a grudge or negative emotion releases toxic chemicals inside your system which when felt repeatedly leads to chronic illness.

Dear Friend,

I'm sure you'll agree that every day can be a day to celebrate and to give thanks. It's always time well spent when we look back and remember both the easy times and the times when we've had to overcome our fiercest obstacles.

The American pilgrims back in the 1600s had a painstaking journey on a vessel where many lost their lives. Arriving at Plymouth Rock, they faced an extreme winter cold that took it's toll on many more lives. Fortunately, a native Indian taught them how to grow their own food and this saved the people from starvation.

That summer, a severe drought came so the people turned to fasting and prayer, bringing down rain showers at the end of the day. If those people were not grateful, we would not have known their stories which were passed down from generation to generation.

Do we have a story to tell and to celebrate during this season?

If you can read this, chances are, you've been taught by a teacher.

Teachers have a lot on their plate. They make their lesson plans for the whole year, keep records on each student, correct test papers, keep updated in their subjects and most of all conduct voice-vanishing informative lectures! Teachers have to be creative and patient for the most inquisitive minds and they have to make learning fun!

William A. Ward said, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." Let's honor a teacher this month! Happy Teacher's Day on October 5th!

Here are some ways to appreciate (and maybe encourage) the teachers you meet and know:

Give an apple. Long ago during the American pioneers, there were no gift shops or malls where people could buy gifts so they gave apples to their teachers. It's also a way of wishing someone good health due to the age-old adage "An apple a day keeps the doctor away".
Write a letter or note of thanks detailing how he or she has helped you or your child. It will surely inspire them to be even better teachers! Send a copy of the letter to the school administrator. Post your favorite teacher's accomplishments on websites and blogs to honor him or her.
Help a teacher by decorating their homeroom or by brightening up or cleaning up their office!
Plan a surprise party for your teachers! Have them relax and destress after a hard day at work! Instead of them organizing what the children will do, pack their afternoon with fun games and activities!
Honor these extraordinary and exemplary teachers! Using colored seeds, Mr. Benjamin Martinez made mosaic paintings and taught this skill to help many indigent students. Mrs. Lourdes Matan of Calbayog City, despite their school's lacking resources, made her own learning materials that were later adapted by the other schools in their city. Mrs. Gemma Cortez launched an environment program that made their barangay one of the cleanest in Cavite. The "Bayanihan" Spirit of the Filipinos

Our country is on the road to repair as the floodwaters have just gone down, after being unexpectedly ravaged by typhoon Ondoy.

In these moments, we hear so many stories of courage and heroism. Truly the Filipino "bayanihan" spirit has not been watered down as Rescue Drop-off centers burst with volunteers and donations amounting to millions.

Thank you very much for all the donations that have been given via our branches throughout Metro Manila. These will be given to GMA Foundation, Montalban areas (through He Cares foundation), and other Metro Manila areas (through Tahanan ng Panginoon) At present, donations for relief goods (no cash or perishables) are still accepted.

To surprise her, the family opened up her dollhouse and decorated the rooms with balloons, a cake and even miniature greeting cards all over! Then they blindfolded her and led her to the cabinet to see the little party going on!

This was such a meaningful and unique way of celebrating who she was to them... I should know, she's my mother!

Here are some fun ideas to make your Lolo or Lola feel loved!

The best gift you can give them is quality time. Whether it is shopping with Lola or chess with Lolo it will surely make their heart glad! To make the day more special, cook their favorite dish!
A scrapbook with their favorite memories would be a wonderful gift. Gather letters and e-mails from family and friends (a page per person) and decorate it with their pictures, magazine cutouts or drawings. Have them write their fondest memories with your grandparent. Poems, prayers, wishes, stories, inspirational sayings and jokes are also nice entries. Start this early and give a deadline to everyone so it can be finished by Grandparent's Day! These are positive thoughts that we pull out when we are feeling down and discouraged. These are words of inspiration and hope that we use to battle negative self-talk that sometimes comes into our mind depending on the situation we are confronting.

For example, when challenged, one might say "I'll never make it!"
An affirmation for this could be "I can do all things"(Phil 4:13)

A good idea would be to collect affirmations that you find helpful and post it on your mirror or refrigerator. If you read it often enough, it will transform your mind and empower you to be the best you can be!

Taking Good Care of Yourself

In today's busy world, it's easy to just get caught up in your regular routine, unaware of ordinary things we do that can cause harm to our well-being. Take the time to take good care of you!
Personal Time is important. Take at least half an hour to be alone in a restful atmosphere and recharge. Do some thanksgiving prayers and do some journaling.
Overtime at the office? Store some whole-wheat bread, fruits and nuts to keep your body energized. Forget the junkfood and softdrinks as they usually contain too much salt or sugar. Of course drink lots and lots of water!
Talcum powder has been a common household item for years but did you know that some studies link inhaling talc to serious illness? Be sure to check that it doesn't contain asbestos. A healthier alternative is cornstarch-based powders or use mineral makeup instead.
What if you overindulged on unhealthy food? Counter it by drinking some green tea! The benefits are from head to foot!
Can't quit smoking? Try the classic and mint flavored alternative herb "cigarettes" sold at health stalls like Carica. We hope it helps you quit this destructive habit and live a healthier happier lifestyle.
As much as possible, choose local organic products rather than products packed with chemicals. Notes from a Summer Garden

Surround your life with growing things!
Want to improve the look of your home without spending a fortune on renovating? Grow some vines and plants all around your home! Walls and fences with climbing ivy and green shrubs bring a classic and elegant look! It also brings cool air despite the summer heat!
No space for a garden? Potting is the key! Plant some tomato, basil, parsley (or whatever you like) in a big pot (all together) and be sure to water it when dry. Using a recycled can for your pot is okay!

Make your own garden Stepping Stones out of cement. All you need is a plastic plate/ pizza box/ ice cream buckets etc. and sticks for any words you want to put there and you can use real leaves (choose ones with lots of texture on them) and embed the shape onto cement while not yet hardened.

Dear Friend,

At Easter egg hunts, one never knows what he may find. Sometimes, one looks under an overturned pot and finds an insect rather than a brightly colored egg!

Sometimes one is looking with much difficulty through shrubs, dirt and grime but does not find the egg right under a few blades of grass at his feet.

These simple child delights confront us yet today. Life can be one great egg hunt in which we do not know what meets us at every turn.

For many, Easter (meaning "Great Day" in Slavic), ends after April 12th and is only the culmination of the Lenten Season and Holy Week festivities.

But for all Christians, the season of rejoicing has just begun! Within the next 50 days (until the Feast of Pentecost), we recall how the dark and gloomy night of Good Friday turned into the new dawn of Easter Sunday!

As this period is more special than others, let's look around us with great anticipation for what the Lord has in store for us. Let's open our hearts to the joy of His eternal gift! His surprises ever abound and surround us everywhere!

Happy Easter Season and Happy Earth day on April 22, 09!

How to Make a Dreambook
What's a dream book you say? It's basically a scrapbook to help you visualize your dreams. There is a story of a hunchback prince who became straight and tall by seeing a straight and tall statue of himself every day. The more you picture yourself living the life you have always dreamed brings that dream all the more closer to reality!

Steps:

Make a list of your dreams (be sure your dreams are good in every way).
Find a picture of you that you like. The picture should have good contrast and your face should be bright (not dark). Cut out the head.
Photocopy the picture into as many copies as you like.
Find old magazines, newspapers, art paper, ribbons, scrapbook material and find pictures and words that have relation to your dreams.
Write down bible verses that empower you to achieve your dreams like "Nothing is impossible with God" from Luke 1:37 or "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" from Philippians 4:13. Choose bright colored paper for these.
Piece all of these materials together so you have a visual reminder that dreams do come true and look at your dream book often.

Note: Your dreams won't just materialize because of your dreambook but it should motivate and inspire you to take baby steps towards those dreams!

In the Season of Lent
Lent means "Spring" ("lente" in Dutch), a time to reflect, pray and renew our love for God! For only 40 days in our year, we get the chance to focus on our inner life. How is our spirit growing? Are we becoming more kind, more generous? more loving?

A good practice during this season is to make each day count. Do something kind each day of Lent. It may be as simple as giving a glass of water to someone or saying a short prayer for someone in need. This will be our offering to our Lord who so generously gave His life so that death or sin may never come between our friendship with Him. Offer this simple act each day before retiring at night so you can converse a little with the Lord.

The times we live in are uncertain but so were the days when Jesus was born. Bethlehem was a place subdued by Greeks, Romans and Muslims at different points in its history and was at that time under the rule of Herod, a man known for his brutality.

Generally, people led very simple lives and lived under the shadow of their rulers. They were hoping for a saviour who would release them from poverty and oppression.

Who would have known that the saviour they were looking for would come in the form of a helpless baby and that the gift he brought was not only for them but for all generations to come?

Today, as we rise to the challenges of a world in crisis, let us remember the eternal hope that is ever before us, and how it comes to us in ways the world does not recognize. It often comes as a still, small voice reassuring us that we have a God who holds all things in His hands. Let us hope and rejoice that our Saviour lives not just in the past, but is with us as we face today and tomorrow!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.~Romans 15:13

12 Ways to Have a Merry Christmas
Once the "ber" months roll in, we sometimes feel a rising panic at the thought of all the preparations, shopping, parties, traffic and crowds that come with the season. It would be helpful to plan to have the most memorable Christmas ever without spending or stressing much!

1. This time is for family! Get out your calendar and block out the days you want to spend with your family. Stick to it strictly even if you get invited to last minute parties or get tempted to work overtime just to impress the boss.

2. When spending quality time with your loved ones, don't just spend time watching a telenovela or movie but as much as possible, have an interactive activity such as playing cards or board games or better yet telling stories of the blessings of the past year!

3. Have a time for peace and quiet. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, recharge by going by yourself to some place conducive to pleasant thoughts. Thank God for another year of life and meditate on how He wants you to approach the new year. Read Jeremiah 29:11 and pray for all your plans to be led by God's Spirit!

4. Serve the most impoverished in your neighborhood. Jesus, whose birth we celebrate said "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40). How delighted He would be as we give this gift! Aspire to give hope to those who have lost theirs by acts of selfless deeds of kindness.

5. Dress the house up in lights! This year, instead of the old Christmas decor, make your own! Cut out easy to do snowflakes (see this video) or make paper doves (below) and put Christmas lights on them to add sparkle to your home!

6. Celebrate the Advent Season with special traditions! Make an advent wreathe (click here to know how) or make a Countdown Calendar! The calendar can be filled with daily activities you can offer to God as your gifts for His coming! Example of things you may offer to Him is to serve your parents one day and say an encouraging word to someone sad on another day.

7. Try a new recipe and cook it together with family and friends! This is quality time you will remember for years to come and the best reward is the afterward tasting session!

8. Gather friends and family for a memorable video! Write down interview questions for your oldest relatives to preserve these precious stories for generations to come. Gather the children for their own presentation. On Christmas eve, watching this video can be your reunion activity.

9. Sing Christmas carols around a bonfire until you run out of songs to sing!

10. Read the Christmas story to your children and if you would like their imagination and creativity to flourish, act it out in a play and let them participate.

11. Here's an easy way to make a Christmas like no other. Instead of putting the gifts under the tree, why not hide them and make a map for the recipients to find it.

12. Bless your whole family with a retreat. Join church-based events or make your own. You can also integrate a time to be spiritually recharged during your family reunion by having the family, including little children, write down blessings they've received and collecting this in a yearly scrapbook for all to cherish!

If we are parents, we teach our values to our kids. If we have younger siblings, we teach them how to behave by the way we act towards them. At school, we are teachers and students not only in academics but also about relationships, responsibilities, excellence and many more things.

The question is not if we are teachers or not but if we are good teachers. We know a good teacher when we see one. He is the one who is patient with us when we find it most difficult to learn. Let's pay tribute to the good teachers in all of us!

We want to thank those of you who have responded to our call for children's storybooks and workbooks!

The kids we are tutoring are so blessed! A small group of tutors goes to Brgy. Bungad every other saturday to tutor around 10 or so gradeschool scholars of He Cares Foundation. Many thanks as well to Bgy. Captain Ricky Corpuz who allows us to use the barangay premises for our tutorials.

He is also fixing up a room for us to set up a barangay library where the kids can stay and practice their reading (which they really need to do!).

This is a very simple yet meaningful activity for any small group of people and we hope it will make a difference in the lives of these very bright children! They just need a helping hand and more than any academic superiority, we are giving them the encouragement to keep on keeping on!

If you want to donate more books, just address them to Christina and drop them off at any Papemelroti branch. It will be part of our new library! Good News for Teachers!

In celebration of Teacher's month, Metrobank Foundation is pleased to announce that Manila Doctor's Hospital will offer "Wellness Packages" for teachers for the whole month of October 2008! These packages will include executive checkups, cardiovascular tests and liver examinations. Discounts will be given for these procedures.

Discount on all service packages specifically designed for male and female teachers are also offered. Teachers are required to present their PRC licence and school ID (where they are teaching) for proper identification at the Industrial Medical Services Department of the hospital. 2. Order now for your stock of wall calendars and planners. Don't order too much. Just have a good quantity enough to offer your regular customers.
3. The best thing you can do for your business is to have a listening ear to your customers! Ask them what they want to see in your shop. Ask them what their budget is for their gift giving. You'll have a better idea of what to order.
4. Order a good bulk quantity of items below P50 as these always get sold fast, sometimes to just one person!

Dear Friend,

Remember the times when you were little and most of your carefree days would be spent on a playground?

Childhood is such a precious time and the memories of it will forever be a part of us.

Much of the joys we've experienced were made possible through the people who've raised us up, cared for us and whether gently or sternly, taught us life's lessons - our grandparents.

They have influenced our future more than we realize. Let's make sure that the good they've shown us lives on in our lives and is passed on to others!

Grandparent Collage Frame Craft
A personalized gift any grandparent will be happy to have!

Materials: magazine pages, scissors, glue, thick markers, photocopier, white paper, blank frame (from Papemelroti, bookstores or mall home section), cloth scraps and scrapbooking components (optional)

Take a picture of your grandparent. Make sure he/she is smiling!
Print out the picture and enlarge using a photocopier. The height of the head should be 1/3 the size of your frame.
Cut out the head from the picture. Set aside.
For the back portion of the frame, gather old letters, bright full color magazine pages, other pictures or drawings. Glue onto the frame backing.
Cut a piece of paper for the bottom banner (it doesn't have to be straight!) and with your marker, write your name (you may want to include the date or a special message as well!).
Look for a body for the picture in the magazine or better yet, cut pieces of cloth and form a neck, torso and arms. Glue onto the backing.
You may add lace, buttons, wire shapes, ribbons, paper cutouts and other scrapbook components to the backing.
Glue the head picture and write the title message using your marker on the top portion of the frame. Cover with glass and secure the frame backing to finish the project.

Tutoring Streetkids

Ever wonder what to do when a street kid asks you for money? We asked Kuya Joe Dean Sola of He Cares Foundation. Their mission is to get the kids out of the streets and into good homes and schools. We hope with them that one day, there will be no more Filipino children begging in the streets.

Kuya Joe Dean says you can give them something to eat but don't give them money. Instead, befriend them, be kind to them and show them they don't belong in the streets.

If you want to join others who share this vision, volunteer for He Cares foundation and other charitable organizations working to get the kids off the streets. He Cares now supports 200 scholars but it's a gruelling task to change lives. They need people to help them understand their lessons, teach them good manners and right conduct and most of all, they need people to encourage them that they have a bright future!

If you're part of a school club, organization or group of friends, you can adopt one of the He Cares areas and put up a tutoring pool of volunteers. This way, the kids will have ates and kuyas to help them along the way!
