2006 Good News Christmas E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

"I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today a Savior has been born to you..."

Such marvelous and wondrous words resonate in our hearts during this season! As we Filipinos know, Christmas is celebrated here as soon as the "ber" months set in! We have all that time to reflect and be grateful for God's goodness of giving us Jesus, the best gift we can ever have!

God who is rich in everything, is poor in only one thing - He only has one son! How blessed are we that He has given His Son to us so that we can also be part of His holy family. Let's be a bringer of this good news to others this season and always!

We wish you all the magic and warmth of Christmas!

Yabang Pinoy
Want to help our country for only P50? Support the “Yabang Pinoy” Campaign! What's it all about?
“Yabang Pinoy” is a campaign to raise awareness and heighten Filipino people’s ethos, dignity and pride by advocating the use of a piece of braided abaca band that aims to make a statement. The abaca band aims to signify a Filipino being truly proud to be one. Yabang Pinoy recently won in Philippine Daily Inquirer's 2BU Click Awards. You can also check their site for more details.

Greenpeace launches 10% by 2010 campaign!
Here are their findings on alternative energy sources:

Based on a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the United States of America, the Philippine wind energy resource potential - 76,000-MW - can supply over 7x the current power demand of the country. Experts project that in a 10-year plan period, commercial viability can reach anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of the said potential.

Solar power is abundant in the country and is capable of producing 1500 hours of power annually at 5 kilowatt hours per square meter per day. Solar energy in the Philippines possesses one of the highest efficiency ratings in the world. In fact, energy from sunlight that falls on a land area half the size of Quezon City can provide the power needs of the entire country.
Greenpeace is not asking for the moon; Greenpeace is calling for 10% of our power to come from the sun, wind and modern biomass power by 2010. Click here to get more information and sign online.

Stretching Your Budget
With malls starting to play Christmas songs, one can't help feel a bit of pressure to stock up on Christmas gifts. Rising prices, busy schedules, increasing family needs and incidental expenses also pile up so it's time to work up a strategy to save some money and stretch our wallet power!
Make a Christmas list early on before the crowds kick in. Take advantage of Pre-Christmas sales and stock up before prices skyrocket. This way you can still do some price comparisons before you make your final purchases. You'll also spend less time in lines and will get the best quality products.

  • Use your credit card sparingly. Cash purchases are less costly and help make your budget easier to keep track of.
  • Buy items that are an asset rather than a liability. A good example is saving up for a sewing machine and dressmaking classes rather than an expensive dress that may get ruined in the washing machine after the first night out. Sewing your own clothes may seem too hard but in the long run, you can save a lot of money by being able to alter old styles into new, do repairs or even start your own business!
  • Sell your recyclables: used paper, newspapers, bottles, scrap metal for extra cash. Have a garage or yard sale to get rid of useless clutter in your home.
  • Save on meal expenses by drinking water instead of juices and softdrinks. You will also get healthier since it's less sugar in your diet.
  • Use public transport, ride a bike or walk to destinations instead of taking the car if you can. Save on fuel, reduce smog and get some exercise too while you're at it!
  • Get a lot of free stuff online - pictures, fonts, software, music, e-books, games, websites all for free! Just log on to and click on the numerous freebie sites. You can even donate for free! Just click to for the cause closest to your heart.

2006 Grandparent's E-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Ever wonder what it feels like to slow down and to readily appreciate what really matters most in life? With some aches and pains along the way, you get to value the little things you're still able to do and savor every moment of life rather than think about the future or dwell on mistakes of the past. These are signs of growing old gracefully and maturing in wisdom through the years.

As Grandparent's Day fast approaches, so too comes our chance not just to celebrate having our grandparents but also to learn from them. One day, God willing, we too may have a wealth of memories and revel in the present's joys.

Happy Grandparents Day on September 10, 2006!

E-Newsletter Editor

Ideas for Honoring our Grandparents
  • Videotape your Lolo and/or Lola telling his/her life story. Prepare interesting questions beforehand about times long gone, the family history and childhood memories. Ask what your grandparent has learned through the years. This will be a treasured family movie that can be viewed by succeeding generations!
  • Make a website in minutes with Dayspring's Celebration service. Just fill in the details and it's done! Put in the name of your Lolo and/or Lola and write down your greetings, favorite anecdotes and on Grandparent's Day you can show the site to them. They will be touched! See a sample and other Celebration Sites here
  • Let grandkids make a poem about their grandfolks. That will just warm their hearts.
  • Let grandkids make a bookmark for their grandparents. Some words for the bookmark - "Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children." by Alex Haley , OR another saying "Age is a matter of feeling, not of years" -GW Curtis
  • Make a family tree and give it to your grandparent/s OR you can make the project together. Grandfolks love to help out and they're the best source for the information. See a Papemelroti family tree product. To make your own, click here
  • Visit a Senior. If your grandparents have either passed on or abroad, think of a senior whom you know will be appreciative of a visit from you. Bring your friends along. Spend time telling stories and be blessed!
  • For a one-of-a-kind personalized gift for the grandparent in your life, take a look at Papemelroti's newest products (at the bottom of this e-mail) - special mention is our Special Times frame.

Papemelroti on QTV Channel 11

Hair Comes Help!
The August 11 sinking of a Petron oil tanker off the coast of Guimaras and the succeeding leakage of fuel affecting the marine life has spurned a wave of volunteerism among ... hairdressers! Reyes Haircutters and Philippine International Hairdressers Association have all agreed to give hair for the cause!

Yes, hair can help! During the Exxon oil spill in Alaska, hair was found to absorb and hold the oil even more effectively than chicken feathers, wool or straw. So, let's collect as much hair as we possibly can!

For everyone who can help (check your local salon), you may course your donations through Mary Ann Velas or Mang Rene, YPNET at 21-C Matimpiin St., Brgy. Pinyahan, Diliman, Quezon City. Tel no. +639178851186.

Kung Fu Class
Ever wonder how those martial arts legends like Bruce Lee combine power, discipline and grace all in a swift movement? Want to learn self-defense and be fit at the same time? Learn this priceless art and grow in the wisdom of science that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Join the 5:30-7 pm class every Fridays at the 5/F, Korben Place, 91 Roces Ave. QC and see for yourself. There is a 7-day basic course for beginners which will guide you through the principles of one of the most powerful arts in Southern China. For inquiries, call Tina at 4126487 / 3742442.

Stop Whaling
Do you want to save whales from extinction? Then sign the petition for a million signatures to end the needless slaughter of whales for scientific research. Log on to .

For Our Feathered Friends
Ever wondered why the Philippines is called a biological "hotspot"? One way to prove it is to be aware of the wonderfully varied and unique birdlife we have in our country. Come to a Wild Bird Club Art Exhibit featuring endemic birds on September 19-October 15, 2006 at the Stairway Gallery, QC.

Another great event most of all for children is the 2nd Philippine Bird Festival on September 22-23, 2006 at Crossroad 77 Convenarium, Mother Ignacia, Quezon City.
See more fun and learning activities online at and be sure to tell your friends never to bother wild animals and help protect them at all times.

Coastal Cleanup 2006
Once again thousands of people around the world will unite on September 16 for a good cause. Every 3rd saturday of September is International Coastal Cleanup day. The goal: to help cleanup our coastlines and prevent the destruction of our seas and marine life and also to spread awareness to others who see us in this activity.

To join: simple download a data sheet at, pick a coastline or waterway to clean. Do the cleanup on Sept. 16 while filling up the data sheets. Submit these to the nearest DENR office.

2006 Father's Day E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

Ever wonder how Leo Oracion or Erwin Emata must have felt setting foot on the summit of the highest mountain in the world? It must have been an awesome feeling.*

But if you think about it, each person on earth has been commissioned to embark on the greatest adventure of all time - LIFE! For each of us, our personal journeys are never the same, as well as the depth of our discoveries. Some of us trudge along, finding our steps drag along the way - while others relish each step, taking in the breathtaking view that comes with every change or challenge overcome.

This month we celebrate and thank God for our fathers. They have helped direct our steps much like the North star or a compass has. Let's be thankful for the way they have shared their life with us through calm or stormy seas.

Happy Father's Day on June 18!

1. Follow traffic rules.
2. Whenever you buy or pay for anything, always ask for an official receipt.
3. Do not buy smuggled goods. Buy local. Buy Filipino.
4. When you talk to others, especially to foreigners, speak positively of our race and our country.
5. Respect your traffic officer soldier and other public servants.
6. Do not litter. Dispose your garbage properly. Segregate. Recycle. Conserve.
7. Support your church (or charitable/civic organizations)
8. During elections, do your solemn duty.
9. Pay your employees well.
10. Pay your taxes.
11. Adopt a scholar or adopt a poor child.

2006 Mother's Day E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

Mother's are a lot like gardeners except they raise up children instead of plants. They have an extraordinary amount of patience and love because they can see how much their children can "bloom" in God's time!
Without the watchful gaze of a gardener, weeds and insects can destroy the most precious of flowers and make a tree or vine be fruitless. That's how important mothers are to us!
As adults, God continues to "water our souls" with His abiding presence daily. He is the "Gardener of our Souls"!
Sometimes we may not think God is there specially when we experience a lot of needs unfulfilled. If we look to the example of the bougainvilla, we will see that some plants flower and bloom much much more when they are exposed to the harsh sunlight. Sometimes we need to be "dry" to reach our fullest potential.
A promise we can all hold on to is that the man who delights in God's ways shall be "like a tree {firmly} planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers." - Psalm 1:3
This Easter season, may we rejoice that whether we are a Mother ourself, or a child, we have God beside us tending us if we seek Him and allow His tender touch in our lives.
Happy Mother's Day on May 14!

Earth Day article

Earth day is celebrated every April 22nd each year. Why celebrate Earth Day?

Whenever we celebrate Earth day, we celebrate life! If you touch anything within your reach at this moment, it has most surely come from the earth - it could be cellphone, computer or ballpen - the earth's materials were processed into making that item. All we eat comes from the earth's produce! The most beautiful sights we can ever see when we're on vacation come from nature untouched by man.

Knowing this reminds us of our great responsibility to care for our earth so it can continue to be a source of life for all. Here are some simple ways to celebrate Earth day:

  1. Join festivities of the Haribon Foundation, Cycling Advocates, Winner Foundation, Wild Bird Club and other earth-friendly groups on Earth Day, April 22nd, Saturday. There will be a fun bike ride starting from the QC circle ending up at the CCP complex where more fun activities are in store the whole day. More details here.
  2. Join the 8th Tour of the Fireflies: "ReCycle: Balik Bisikleta" on April 23, 2006 and promote cycling for cleaner air! The 50-km, easy paced ride this year starts and ends at Tiendesitas (C-5) More details here
  3. Plant a tree or nurture a new plant for your home! Cleaner air starts with us!
  4. Join birdwatching tours and learn not just about our feathered friends - click to Wild Bird Club Philippines
  5. Read WWF's recommendations on how we can save the earth in our day to day activities. Click here
  6. Increase your knowledge of our amazing and unique local flora and fauna. Click here
  7. Get a copy of the new #7136-2 Papemelroti Super Earth Saver book with ways to recycle the most common waste products from your home. click to view online
  8. More suggestions on the Papemelroti Earth Day page click here
Learn How to Recycle Paper (Easily)!
Recycling paper has a lot of good purposes. It saves you the trouble of buying paper for writing, giftwrapping, greeting cards & letters. You can also get creative - coloring paper, putting leaves and different elements - making it as thick or thin as you want. You can also learn to mold the paper into decorative shapes! More importantly, you reduce the need for more paper -which lessens the cutting down of trees which we all need for cleaner air, flood control, maintaining the ecological balance among many other benefits.
Now you can learn how to do it! Just drop by our Casa Vicente-Susana Alabang branch starting Friday, April 21! There will be a booth for making Handmade Paper and the staff there can assist you! You may purchase a handmade paper making kit there but the lesson is for free (!!!). Click here for map
Papemelroti Thought Cards
Now you can receive a daily dose of "Today's Advice", (from our popular Papemelroti paper pack line) suggestions on how to spend your "Personal Time" or "Personal Prayers" through your mobile phone. You can also send this as a gift. MMS or SMS available! So many themes available! Simply pick the theme you want and text your requests! Click here to choose your category and more instructions.

Books For Less Book Feature: 365 TV-free Activities (you can do with kids)
Imagine having a fun creative activity to do with your kid for every day of the year! Something that will lure them away from habit-forming TV and promote a deeper relationship between parent and child!
On page 113 there is the "Forest Crowns and Bracelets" activity. Kids and parent can make a crown or wreath from garden leaves. This sparks the imagination of children and transports them into the magical land of make believe!
On page 88, "Eat Right" teaches the kids about nutrition by making a game of it. Everyone pitches in to make a food chart of the 4 basic food groups (protein, dairy, vegetable/fruit and bread/grains/cereals - and cut out pictures from magazines. After teaching which is which, let the child see if he/she can put the foods into the right groups!

2006 Graduation E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

Whether it's moving up day for your pre-schooler or finishing up your own masteral degree, graduation means growth and change for the better. Even if you've said your farewells to your textbooks a long time ago, we hardly ever stop learning from the university of life.
It all depends on the subjects you choose to take. Do you take up advanced courses in Patience, Compassion and Hope or go to the more popular classes on Money, Popularity and Beauty? What have you been learning lately? What grades do you get at the end of the semester?
Another question we can ask ourselves is if we are bus-riders or jeep-takers. By buses and jeeps, I don't mean what mode of travel we use everyday but rather how we get to where we want to go using life's roads.
A bus-rider is willing to go the distance just to meet other travelers at the designated bus stop rather than the jeep-taker who takes his ride anywhere he pleases (even sometimes in the middle of the road). The bus-rider has to wait for the other riders to fill the bus before he can go his way while the jeep-taker lets other people wait 'til he gets on before they can all finish their journey.
As this season of Lent moves along, may we take a moment to reflect on what 'subjects' we've signed up for and what 'diploma' we're hoping to get at the end of the course. May we each hear "Well done, good and faithful servant" on our graduation day!
"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil 3:14)

Celebrating Ideas
Here are some suggestions for your grad parties and other occasions!
  • Decorate the place with themed placemats out of photocopied report cards or diplomas. Hang rolls of white paper tied with red/maroon ribbon from the ceiling to give that 'finished' look.
  • Must Put Mustache - A variation on "Pin the Donkey"! Blow up a picture of your graduate or favorite teacher. Draw a mustache on a piece of paper. Attach masking tape at the back for sticking. Hang the photo and blindfold each guest to try and put the mustache in the right place!
  • Gift Project: You've graduated! You're out to make your mark on the world! But wait, look back to those who've made it happen! Gift your parents and teachers with a simple letter or token to show your appreciation for giving you the world of opportunities through education. You may also hook up with other grads and give a gift to the community. Plan out the best way to make a difference and start making your mark in a totally unconventional way!

Power Up Your Peso
Stretching our budget is a challenge not only fitted to new grads but to everyone, specially during these times:
  • It's very important to make a list of all your monthly expenses so you can make an accurate budget plan. When you get your first (or following) paycheck, the first thing you should do is allot a tenth to your local church or faith community (as it says in the bible). Allot another tenth to savings. Work on the succeeding budget for all your other needs. This may seem like an odd piece of advice but it is very important. It is founded on God's promise that if you "seek first God's kingdom, all the rest will follow".
  • Recognize needs from wants. Play the waiting game. If you still want to purchase the item you're eyeing after 45 days, then go ahead. Chances are you might find something better and more suited to your budget.
  • Lessen your meals outside the home. Fix up your own healthy meals and take these to work/school. If you don't have the luxury of time, opt for healthy easy-to-prepare sandwiches made of wholewheat bread, veggies and cold cuts with fruit and yoghurt. Bring your own water with you (and drink up often, it's good for you) instead of buying drinks.
  • Walk or bike instead of taking public transport and develop a healthier lifestyle. Avoid passing major highways so you won't breathe in the fumes.
  • Cut down on unnecessary expenditures like clothing and shoes. Try going to thrift shops and going vintage if you just can't resist the urge!
  • Canvass before purchasing items to see where you can get the best buy. The extra effort is way worth it when it comes to saving money!
  • Be slow to throw things away. Find uses for discardables, and also grow in your creativity. Practice re-using items so you don't have to buy again. Repair things rather than buy new items.
Lent: A Time to Begin
Lent is the Old English word for "spring", a time when all of nature begins to show signs of life again after the harsh cold of winter. In our spiritual life, it is a chance to begin anew in our friendship with God and purge ourselves of excesses to have more room in our lives for Him.
Reflections: Click here for a simple daily Lenten reflection from Upper Room ministries. If you want to have a group study, here's a link to a free guide. We also recommend St. Alphonsus Liguori's Lenten Meditations (book).

2006 Valentines E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

We thought we'd feature a message from Christian writer, preacher and inspirational speaker Bo Sanchez in this issue.
Everything you need to be happy is within you
To love and be loved is the greatest happiness of existence.Sydney Smith
At the end of the day, there is only one thing that can make us happy. It is called LOVE, because we are born for love. We are designed for it. Every cell of our body, every part of our soul is created for love. Surround yourself with love. And practice it daily.
People in their deathbeds never say, “I wish I had bought a car”, or “I wish I had spent more time in my office…” Listen to people in their dying hour and you will hear the same regret: “I wish I had spent more time loving…” Relationships are the most important things in our lives – more important than all the wealth in the world.
Money is like saltwater. No amount of money will quench your inner thirst for love and happiness. It will only make you thirstier. You want more and more and more until you drop dead from spiritual malnutrition.
Learn to love everyday. Let this be your highest ambition in life: to be a great lover! So when the money comes, you will make money a servant of love.
Are you a loving person? Are you kind, generous, forgiving? Do you love yourself too? Rate yourself from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most loving. You will notice that your score will also be your score for personal happiness. Does your schedule and budget express the truth that your relationships are the most important things in the world?

It's All About Love!
Love quote: 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. - Alfred Lord Tennyson
Love game: Play this with the whole family or with friends. Ask everyone to sit together in a circle. Everyone then writes an act of love or service they would want to be done to them that makes them feel the most loved (ex. I feel most loved when someone bakes me a cake). When everyone is done, someone reads out all that is written. Everyone tries to guess who wrote what. Everyone who makes a mistake in their guess has to fulfill that act of service for the one they had a mistake with.
True Love Analysis: Just for fun, see if the experts can really tell if you're compatible or not! (Don't take their word as the final say though!) Click here to take the test
Love Story: Here are true love stories you might want to read (as mushy as they get) from AStorytoShareSouthwestlife website. Write your own love story and submit it to Chicken Soup for the Soul. Click here to know how and how people met from .
