2007 Christmas Day e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,
How great and wondrous a time is this that we reflect and remember the time our Lord Jesus visited us and to long for Him to come again and save us eternally! It's Advent once again! Meaning "to come" in Latin, we seek Christ's coming into our lives and hearts in a renewed way during this season of grace!

Are we prepared for Christmas? Let's take a look at our hearts... is it filled with gratitude, joy and anticipation? Is it at peace and not in a state of chaos from all the busyness? Is there anyone on earth (or elsewhere!) our hearts have not forgiven? or need to ask pardon from? Are we willing to give, not only to those who can give back in return but more so to those who can't?
If we answered a negative to any of these questions, then let's take hold of the grace during this season and breathe this prayer... "Come Lord Jesus and renew me, renew the face of the earth!".

Have a most blessed and grace-filled Christmas season!

"At Christmas, play and make good cheer,
For Christmas comes but once a year." - Thomas Tusser

Christmas Memorabilia Tree
Make your tree extra special! Make the decorations yourself! It will be a tree like no other! This was taught at the Ayala Christmas workshop, Makati last Dec. 2 by Mrs. Patsy Paterno.

1. Start with a picture or pictures - any picture you’d like to see again and again, just make sure it won’t embarrass your teenage son or daughter! The picture usually dictates the size, the color and sometimes the shape of the frame.

2. 2. Cut out the picture frame and backing out of cardboard. If the shape of the frame is difficult like an oval or star, make a pattern out of paper first and fit it to the picture.

3. 3. Cover the frame with fabric or paper. Glue parts together, making sure you put a hanger made of string, twine or gold thread in between the picture and the backing*. An easier way would be to use die cut picture frames or cut out a frame from our Craft Cuts (available at our shops). You won't need to cover the frame with fabric or paper becase it has a design already.

4. Now for the fun part. Embellish! This is the part where all the kids, even a 1 ½ year old, can participate. Just make sure younger kids are supervised well and kept away from anything that can hurt them. Prepare the materials for them and be sure to put a newspaper over your table so it’ll be easy to clean up afterwards.

5. Materials needed for frame: cardboard, fabric or paper to cover frame, string, scissors, glue or a glue gun. Embellishments may include scrap cloth or paper, beads, ribbons, stickers, buttons, gift wrap, cards or magazines to cut up, wallpaper, paper or cloth flowers, little figurines, crochet flowers, die cuts, origami, sand and glue, sequins, lace, foil from candies or chocolates, glitter glue, dried flowers, twigs and whatever you have on hand. To decorate, you and your kids can use rubber stamping, sponging, drawing with colored pencils and crayons, painting, paper piecing and punching, even embroidery.

6. Don’t forget to write details at the back of the frame - Isabel’s birthday, 2002, frame made by Christopher, age 7. To make it more meaningful, add a thanksgiving prayer or blessing.

Tips and Variations
*If this is the first time you’re being crafty, keep it simple. Glue fabric or paper on thin cardboard or even a sheet of paper using white glue diluted with water (1:1). Cut out shape of frame, glue on to picture and cardboard backing with a string in between. Don’t bother wrapping the sides with the fabric.

When you go to a bookstore, supermarket, craft, gift shop or a toy store, look out for something you can use to make unique frames. I found some metal rings and large earring squares in Divisoria. I glued pictures behind them - a quick and easy way to make frames. The most difficult part was finding pictures small enough to fit the frames! I also used some left over tongue depressors to form a frame by overlapping them to form a square. The easiest way to make a frame would be to use those pre-printed frames found in scrapbooking stores but they can be pricey.

If you want to make frames or ornaments out of clay, here’s my favorite recipe for clay that hardens in an oven toaster: In a large saucepan, mix together 1 cup cornstarch and 2 cups baking soda with a whisk. Add 1 ½ cups cold water and stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil and starts to thicken into a mass like mashed potatoes that holds its shape. Turn out into dish and cover with a damp cloth. Allow to cool. Once cooled, knead until smooth and elastic. Make only objects ½” thick or it will not harden well. Watch when you put objects in the oven as they may burn if they’re in too long.
Always try to reuse stuff that people usually throw away and here are some ideas for those styrofoam take out boxes that end up dirtying our coastlines. After cleaning it, you can cut it up in shapes (hearts, zigzags, squares, etc.) and make designs on it using a pencil or ballpen. This can now be used as a stamp to decorate your frame. OR you can cut up the styrofoam and use as the frame itself. Indent designs on it and paint.

2007 Blessed Day e-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Is today just another day for you? If one looks closely at one's day, it has charms that cannot be wrought out of any other day. Just think, today you have certain people in your life that will not always be there. Today you have a level of health that you will be harder to maintain as the years go by.

Today's news, though good or bad, will not be duplicated tomorrow. Your views may also change by then. Each day holds ephemeral beauty in the delicate fragile flowers or each day's unique sunset. Whether through the sound of the wind's gentle rustling or hearing the sound of your name from a long lost friend.

Today, a child is this way and tomorrow he is another. Today is quite precious and it is a rare blessing to be thoughtful and appreciative of. Let's give thanks to God who crafted each day quite masterfully!

"For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude." -Clarence E. Hodges

Bless and Be Blessed
Here's the proof that it is more blessed to give than to receive!

- Studies show that acts of kindness lengthens one's life. Volunteering, serving your family and friends does your health good so enjoy being kind and compassionate! Encourage others to do so too! Read the full article here

- Do you have a regular prayer time? It has been a well-known fact that stress levels are reduced with prayer and quietening down our spirit. Not only does it prepare us for the day ahead but if we are praying for someone we hardly like, prayer can gradually transform our feelings in time. Anything that can change us for the better is a priceless blessing.

- Giving thanks in the midst of trying times can be very difficult. We would rather gripe about how bad things are. Try being appreciative of little things at first. You will find more and more to be grateful for! Your blessings will overflow as well when you don't take them for granted.

*Take note: Give sincerely - not so you can receive in return or the blessing just won't be the same!

Tips for Ordering for Christmas
1) For those who need corporate giveaways, we are still accepting customized orders! Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for production and delivery to the branch of your choice.

2) You may also shop online at - simply fill up the order/inquiry form and we will reply from Tues-Fridays with the costs, payment options and other information.

3) We advise everyone to shop early to avoid lining up and having the best pick of the products!

Update on Glorietta Shop
We wish to acknowledge and thank many of you have expressed concern for our staff and shop at Glorietta 2 after the tragic explosion last Oct. 19th.

We thank God so much because seconds before the blast, one of our sales staff was just there (where most of the damage was). As soon as she came back to the Papemelroti shop, the loud noise reverberated throughout the whole mall. The only known damage was the shattered window glass which stayed intact until all our sales staff were safely out of the building.

To date, the Ayala management has sealed off the premises indefinitely due to the ongoing investigation. We are now temporary located in a small kiosk at the corridor between Glorietta 1 and 4 leading to SM. By December 1. 2007, we will open at the 3rd floor of Glorietta 3.

We extend our sympathies and pray for all those who were affected.

SM Pampanga Soon to Open

Welcome the 15th branch of Papemelroti!

We hope to open by the end of November at the newly opened wing of SM Pampanga, Mexico, Pampanga. Hope to see you there!

Entrepreneur Magazine

Papemelroti is featured on the November 2007 issue of Entrepreneur magazine. The story of the family business hopes to encourage other families to work together and reap the benefits of similar work ethics and having closer ties.

*We wish to correct some parts of the article. We do not use shells in our crafts because taking these will harm the environment. We also do not have a 5-storey factory in Bulacan but rather our main office is housed in a 5-storey building and our Bulacan factory only has 1 floor.

Thank you very much to Entrepreneur Magazine for featuring us!

2007 Friendship E-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Who are your very best friends and how did they get this precious title? Have you ever stopped to think how each of their personalities (though different) complement each other and how magical it is when all of you are together?

It's just like a patchwork that has different patterns - despite the different colors and designs, it all comes together as a beautiful, not to mention, useful thing.

The next time you come together, why not see how you can use your "magic" in a good way, not just to bring joy to each other but to also bring color and vibrance of life to others who may not be as blessed with that kind of friendship!

Let's all celebrate Friendship not just on August 5 but every day! Happy Friendship Day!

A true friend is the greatest of all blessings, and that which we take the least care of all to acquire.
- Francois de La Rochefoucauld (1613 - 1680)

Friendship Fun Activities

This is a day to celebrate friendship! Why not celebrate your wonderful friends? Here are some ways:
  • Meet at the place where you first met. Bring your earliest photos and reminisce about old times.
  • Dress up in your most formal clothes. Have a photo session.
  • Have a 'halo-halo' party and let your friends bring the ingredients! (Variation: taco, salad, ice cream party)
  • Draw each other. Keep each others' drawings.
  • Cook a meal together. Experiment with the ingredients and invite other friends over to review your concoction.
  • Plan a vacation together. Go to a place you've always wanted to go to. Decide to have a great time!

Friendship Craft Gift

Gifts are more warmly appreciated when it is personally made from the heart! All you need are: fabric pens of different colors and a plain solid-colored t-shirt.

To make the design, think of your friend's interests, favorite animal or food and if you like sketching, you can draw on the shirt. If you'd rather put words, you can put the good traits of your friend all over the shirt.

If you belong to a group of good friends, this would be a great Friendship Day activity and all your shirts can match! Let your creativity be your guide in designing!

2007 Father's Day and Independence Day E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

When asked "Who is your hero?", many of us automatically think of our fathers and mothers. Some may recall saints or people of noble stature. Let's pause and think about it shall we? Can you think of who your hero is? Got one?

Okay, now let's think of your favorite quotation. Some words of wisdom (not from the bible) that inspire you and motivate you to have an exemplary life. Got it?

Now getting back to the hero part, did you pick a Filipino hero? How about the quotation - did a Filipino say it?

Congratulations to you if you answered "yes" to both questions! This can only mean that you highly respect Filipinos and believe in their wisdom.

If you picked a hero that is not a Filipino or thought of a quotation from abroad, ask yourself why? It may well be that we need to know more about the people who have built up this nation. Let's be more informed, and more importantly, more appreciative of those who have passed down a heritage of good values and good deeds to us! Check out our feature on past and present Filipino father heroes!

Feature of Filipino Father Heroes

Do you know who this man is?
We walk it, ride cars on it, talk about it almost everyday. But do we know the man behind it? EDSA is the main thoroughfare of Metro Manila but it's name comes from a man of notable deeds. Epifanio Cristobal de los Santos, otherwise known as Don Panyong, was the father of 12 children.

He was a pianist, painter, composer, sculptor, historian, and one of the greatest Filipino scholars. When the revolution of 1898 broke out, he joined others in producing La Libertad and later La Independencia despite the risks involved. He loved his country greatly as he traveled across Europe to find rare filipiniana relics which are now held as our national treasures. He was known to encourage others despite his rare genius. (born April 7,1871- died April 18,1928) - Read more

Do you know what this man did?
The fight to preserve our seas is ongoing. To make a fast buck, fishermen resort to dynamite fishing. They manage to secure a large catch but also indiscriminately kill corals, endangered marine life and juvenile fish. Little do they know that what they do has an impact on the whole community and its future - how it would take more than a century to recover these coral reefs and how big a threat this was to the fishing industry.

With an estimated 70,000 fishermen blasting away at our precious marine life, Elpidio "Jojo" dela Victoria stood in their way. Being a government official, his post as Chief Commissioner of "Cebu Bantay Dagat" (Protect the Seas, Cebu) caused Jojo's assassination last April 12, 2007. As a result of this, around 2,000 people vowed to go on with the fight. Vincent, his son, urged all to continue “with passion” the advocacy of his father, whom he described as an “amazing man, a good father and a good husband.” Read more

2007 Mothers Day E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

When Mary had baby Jesus, mysterious things started to happen like angels appearing to shepherds. What was Mary's response? She treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19).

A mother's heart is like a treasure chest of cherished memories, sealed with love. It is both strong, willing to sacrifice and take pains to spare her child; and it is also soft with gentleness and care when needed.

What joy and gladness fills our mother's hearts when our hearts are joyful too. What injures us wounds their hearts too. Let us honor our mothers this May 13! They deserve all our love and respect!

"May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!" - Proverbs 23:24-26

The Heart of a Mother
Why is a mother's love so special? Here are some quotations to help us reflect and appreciate our moms!
  • "The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness."- Honore de Balzac
  • "A mother's love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking." - Helen Rice
  • "Who takes the child by the hand takes the mother by the heart." - Danish Proverb
  • "For if my father was the head of our house, my mother was its heart." - Philip Dunne
  • "The mother's heart is the child's schoolroom." - Henry Ward Beecher
Show your mom much love today and always!

Summer Wonder - The Pawikan Place!
Everywhere, Filipinos' environment consciousness is growing. Whereas before no one had ever heard of the Bohol Tarsier, it is now a common sight on tourism advertisements.

Another place that boasts of a wealth beyond what other countries know, is our very own Turtle Islands. Deep down south and only 30 minutes away from Sandakan, Malaysia is an island where around 10 mother turtles lay their eggs every night. This is one of the few remaining major nesting sights in the whole world.

One must be very silent and almost invisible so that these endangered mama turtles can go ashore. They come in the dead of night, as late as after midnight if they think no one is watching.

It was a wonder to see with my own eyes, a wild Green turtle as big as a round table, giving birth to around 300 eggs! These are one of the oldest living creatures on earth! They are the precious resources our country needs to value and preserve for future generations. The turtles come back only after 25 years.

What we can do to help save the turtles: The lives of these precious creatures hang in a delicate balance. Garbage dumping in oceans still remains unabated. Do everything to save our seas, it's actually their home more than ours! For more information on how to help these glorious animals, click to the One Ocean and WWF sites.

Dream Big

Dear Friend,

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. - Henry David Thoreau

Even before your highest aspirations come true, you must already step out in confidence and believe that they are just around the corner! Having this attitude of perseverance and expectant faith will get you to the fulfillment of your dreams faster than ever.

Consider the man who wants to have his own business but is stuck in a dead end job. He has 2 options: he can "give up" or he can actively wait for his opportunity by reading magazines about the field he wants to succeed in, search on the internet for tips... all the while 'defining' and 'fine tuning' his dream so that when the opportunity comes, he is prepared to step up to the challenge!

What option would you take? Would you like to "live the life you have imagined"? Make a commitment to yourself today to dream big and keep believing in yourself, in the beauty of your dreams and most specially in the God who put that dream in your heart!

Are You Dreaming Big Enough?
Here's an excerpt from Alan Cohen's article online. You might want to try it!

On a piece of paper, write the heading, "Know I Can." Under the heading, write down three goals you are confident you can accomplish, and probably will, within a matter of time. Below that section write, "Maybe I Can." Then number 4 through 6, and write down three projects you would like to do, but wonder if you really can. These are the dreams that stretch you beyond your current boundaries, but seem within the realm of possibility. Finally, write the heading, "Outrageous," and for numbers 7 through 9, record the three most outlandish visions you can think of, the dreams that thrill you to consider, but you don't see how they could possibly happen.

The second part of the exercise requires that you read your list daily, spending about twenty seconds visualizing each goal (sixty seconds if you are inspired). Hold each image clearly in mind, and get the feeling that your objective has already been realized.
The exercise becomes even more fun as you check off each goal when it is accomplished. Your visioning will be met with miracles ... through avenues you could never have predicted. will be taking your first step toward thinking for yourself as God thinks for you.
(Papemelroti recommends you to read the full article)

Some Summer Suggestions
For the Naturalist in You
This can be a family project. Collect photographs of either different kinds of trees, herbs or flowers in your neighborhood (just be sure you don't tresspass, okay?). Find out their local names as well as scientific names. Jot down the smell, feel of each plant. Go a bit further and research on the medicinal properties of these plants. If you don't have a good camera, you can sketch them. After all the data gathering, you can make a website to share the information or better yet, record it as a family memorabilia scrapbook. You can also suggest it to a local publishing company if it's good enough! If it doesn't get published, you still would have reaped the benefits of breathing in the oxygen outdoors, bonding with the family and getting the exercise!

2007 Valentine's E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

"We can do no great things; only small things with great love." - Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)

How can one tell when love is great? Surely Mother Teresa should know all about that. She loves until it hurts reaching out to the poorest of the poor and making them feel special and loved. How many of us can do that? We oftentimes love only those that are truly lovable, those that have the ability to love us back.
We can only tell if our love is great when the going gets tough and when we need to make a sacrifice for our loved one. We can only tell if our love is true when it gets inconvenient for us but we still decide to love with our whole hearts, not grudgingly or dragging our feet but with a tender smile on our face!

Only when the "in love" feelings cease can the "true love" feelings surface as the fruit of a decision to love as God loves - unconditionally!

In celebrating love, let's strive for a life filled with "great love"!

Easy Homemade Gift for Hearts Day!
Fresh flowers can be financially draining. Try our paper flower-making technique and see how you can make dainty decor for your dinner date, a spiritual bouquet, accents to your giftwrapping and food gift.

1. Get pink, red and white japanese paper. Cut strips of 2" x 24" - Cut curvy shapes on one side (see fig. below) to make the petals. Each strip will make one flower. A trick is to fold the strip several times over so you can cut them all together in one snip.

2. Next, roll the strip of paper until you have a loosely rolled cigarette-like shape 2" high.

3. Bunch the straight side so the curved side opens up forming a petal-like opening.

4. Secure the paper where you bunched it with string or tape. This is your first flower!

Make a whole bunch in different colors and use to decorate your gift, dining table, etc. You can attach it to wire wrapped in green japanese or crepe paper and cut leaf shapes for a romantic flower arrangement too!
