2007 Father's Day and Independence Day E-newsletter

Dear Friend,

When asked "Who is your hero?", many of us automatically think of our fathers and mothers. Some may recall saints or people of noble stature. Let's pause and think about it shall we? Can you think of who your hero is? Got one?

Okay, now let's think of your favorite quotation. Some words of wisdom (not from the bible) that inspire you and motivate you to have an exemplary life. Got it?

Now getting back to the hero part, did you pick a Filipino hero? How about the quotation - did a Filipino say it?

Congratulations to you if you answered "yes" to both questions! This can only mean that you highly respect Filipinos and believe in their wisdom.

If you picked a hero that is not a Filipino or thought of a quotation from abroad, ask yourself why? It may well be that we need to know more about the people who have built up this nation. Let's be more informed, and more importantly, more appreciative of those who have passed down a heritage of good values and good deeds to us! Check out our feature on past and present Filipino father heroes!

Feature of Filipino Father Heroes

Do you know who this man is?
We walk it, ride cars on it, talk about it almost everyday. But do we know the man behind it? EDSA is the main thoroughfare of Metro Manila but it's name comes from a man of notable deeds. Epifanio Cristobal de los Santos, otherwise known as Don Panyong, was the father of 12 children.

He was a pianist, painter, composer, sculptor, historian, and one of the greatest Filipino scholars. When the revolution of 1898 broke out, he joined others in producing La Libertad and later La Independencia despite the risks involved. He loved his country greatly as he traveled across Europe to find rare filipiniana relics which are now held as our national treasures. He was known to encourage others despite his rare genius. Do you know what this man did?
The fight to preserve our seas is ongoing. To make a fast buck, fishermen resort to dynamite fishing. They manage to secure a large catch but also indiscriminately kill corals, endangered marine life and juvenile fish. Little do they know that what they do has an impact on the whole community and its future - how it would take more than a century to recover these coral reefs and how big a threat this was to the fishing industry.

With an estimated 70,000 fishermen blasting away at our precious marine life, Elpidio "Jojo" dela Victoria stood in their way. Being a government official, his post as Chief Commissioner of "Cebu Bantay Dagat" (Protect the Seas, Cebu) caused Jojo's assassination last April 12, 2007. As a result of this, around 2,000 people vowed to go on with the fight. Vincent, his son, urged all to continue “with passion” the advocacy of his father, whom he described as an “amazing man, a good father and a good husband.” Read more

Filipino Quotations to Ponder On

"I am asking all of you now to do what I ask every Filipino to do –
Never stop hoping for our country.
Don’t stop caring for our people.
Demand greatness from yourself as a Filipino
Inspire greatness in other Filipinos."
- Tony Meloto who started Gawad Kalinga

"I am... happy to die for God. If I have a thousand lives to offer, I will offer them to God." - St. Lorenzo Ruiz

"It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal.
It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming a part of any edifice." - Jose Rizal
