Right Start Art Workshop

It was an afternoon of imaginative recreation at the Right Start Foundation!

The Papemelroti team paid the children a visit and taught them an easy project.  It was creating through play!

First we did the recycled doll workshop kits.

And then the drawing session began with Robert Alejandro.

We topped off the day with a simple meal.

Right Start Community Development, Inc., or in short, Right Start, is a non-stock, non-profit organization with children’s interests at the heart of its existence.

The Right Start Center is a place for children (4-14 years of age) coming from the marginalized sector of the community. Not taking the place of the schools in the community in terms of its academic duties, the Right Start Center offers an afterschool program where children are given legitimate opportunities for play, creativity and personal development.

Book Art by Meldy

Someone wise said, "There's no such thing as too many books!"

Well, now you can look at books in a whole new way through the "mel" in Pape-mel-roti.

We are so proud of Papemelroti artist Meldy!  She is behind many of the shop's adorable figurine characters.  Many of the popular products are named after her husband and children.

She is also jokingly called the "factory worker" because she works so fast!

We want to share with you her latest passion - book art.   We asked Meldy for a tip for those wanting to explore this particular craft and she said - "Patience. It can take hours to make one."

She first got into shaping the pages of books into words and figures because of their family bookstore "Biblio".

Biblio is not your typical bookstore.  As you can see, the store makes books part of the decor!

You don't just buy books here, you can also get your coffee fix.  It's a nice place to sip and read a book.

Biblio's first branch is located at UP Town mall, Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.

Biblio now has a new branch at Ayala Mall Cloverleaf in Balintawak, Quezon City.

Scenes from the Christmas Workshops

It was a flurry of creativity and chaos at the Christmas Workshops this past month!

It was a busy day for Robert Alejandro, Papemelroti's premiere artist who started off with the Three Kings Doll-making Workshop in the morning and then conducted a Basic Acrylic Postcard Painting session in the afternoon.

What do you do if all the kits to make The Three Kings get left behind at the shop? All the participants get a bonus lesson in acrylics, yay!!!! Thanks to Grab Express, we got the kits with still enough time for the real workshop.

The afternoon session on learning basic acrylic painting skills were attended by "kid"-dults!  They were able to recreate Robert's postcard design and discover tricks in developing their own designs for future projects.

This is the first time I taught a "step by step" beginners course on acrylic painting. It was a lot tougher for the students and I was afraid they would struggle - they did. But the big surprise is that they enjoyed (they told me) and they learned a lot. The big lesson for me is "don't be afraid to push your students, most especially if you really would like for them to learn." - Robert Alejandro

One senior lady successfully did it even when she forgot her glasses!

All in all it was a wonderful experience both for Robert and the participants.  It is our hope that everyone will be able to keep using their drawing and craft skills to make inspiring works of art for themselves and their loved ones!
